Choose Your Words Wisely…They Can Build or Destroy

Letters are random symbols we assign to sounds. Words are groups of letters we give meaning to. Even though words are only 7% of how we communicate, words have power based on the intention and energy they carry.

What is said to a young child shapes their beliefs and experiences, that child becomes an adult and talks to themselves and others the way they have been spoken to when they were young and that is how we shape the world.

There’s an old nursery rhyme that says “stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” but is it really true?

I will guarantee the if you were ever teased or picked on while growing up you wouldn’t really agree with the nursery rhyme, I know it first hand since I personally experienced it.

When I was a kid and got picked on, I was told that I was being teased since people liked me. That was not what it felt like to me. I felt alienated and was deeply hurt by the name-calling and the actions of some of the other kids to the extent that I wanted to transfer to another school. In today’s day and age we don’t talk about teasing, we simply call it bullying.

Words have power, being mindful of what you say both to yourself and to others is vital. Your words can make all the difference in the world in one’s life, their self-esteem and their future.

For today just start with yourself, pay attention to that little voice inside that might be criticizing and sabotaging you. What is that voice saying? When you find yourself using negative self-talk, stop yourself, turn the words around and find the positive in the situation or experience, use empowering self-talk. Change your words and change your life.

Now it’s your turn to share your beautiful voice. Remember to be clear since many members in our community can benefit from your comments. Have you ever been in a situation where there was room for more compassionate language? How did you handle the situation? Post your thoughts below and I’ll be sure to read them and personally answer any questions you might have.

I’ll leave you with quotable tip, feel free to share, post or tweet as well as share this blog with others@drkarenjacobson Words have power, they can build you up or break you down, be compassionate, choose your words wisely! #highperformance
